Impact of the Browser Wars
Netscape dominated the browser market handily in the early years of the World Wide Web. Netscape
Communications Corporation was founded by one of the developers of Mosaic, Marc Andreesen. Mosaic
was the first popular graphic-oriented web browser.
By 1995, the World Wide Web was gaining popularity and media attention. That year, Microsoft entered the
browser arena with Internet Explorer 1.0, distributed with Microsoft Windows 95 Plus! Netscape Navigator
dominated the market at this time.
The mid 90’s saw rapid changes in the features supported by browsers, and the competition became heated
between the two rivals. Bug fixes were much lower priority than adding new features. Proprietary extensions
and features were common to try and give a competitive edge.
Netscape goes open source with their browser code in 1998, and in September of that same year loses the
majority to Internet Explorer.

Web development is different in the 2000’s.
- Internet Explorer becomes the dominant browser by a sizable margin.
- Fewer browser releases provide a more stable foundation for building web applications.
- Web applications become more “enterprise level” and the expectations to behave more like a native
application increase.
In terms of the browser functionality since 2003, all the major browsers support the core features comprising
Ajax.
